Libraries across the country are seeing an upsurge in activity in response to the nation’s economic environment. To help libraries meet public demand, it is especially important that people who administer federal library grants have the tools they need. This week, IMLS is hosting a meeting in Washington, DC, with state representatives that have responsibility for managing IMLS's largest program of support for the nation’s libraries, the IMLS Library Grants to States program. State Library Administrative Agencies use these funds to expand library services, develop networks and partnerships and target broad and diverse publics. They support a host of activities from technology infrastructure and statewide access to database licenses to reading programs and workforce development. I am proud of our partnership with the states on administration of this responsive and diverse program.
From November 19-21, 102 representatives from all 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands will come together for the ninth convening of the Grants to States fall meeting. The group, comprised of state library grant coordinators, state librarians, heads of library development, and fiscal officers, will participate in a two-day course on ‘cost principles,’ the key concepts and skills for ensuring that grant expenditures are allowable and audits are problem-free. At the close of the two-day training, participants will have an opportunity to take the exam for the course. Successful completion of this course is one of the cornerstones of grants management certification.
During the conference participants will have the opportunity to network and share best practices in program administration, project management, and initiatives that meet user needs. Staff and guests also will highlight other IMLS partnerships and initiatives like The Big Read, Picturing America, and the Connecting to Collections Bookshelf. Participants will have opportunities to hear from Dr. John Carlo Bertot of the University of Maryland, R. David Lankes of Syracuse University, and John Kenny of E-Luminate Group regarding their various recent endeavors. Attendees will also receive a preview briefing by Bill Wilson and Ethel Himmel on a year-long project to examine overall trends in the Library Grants to States Program which will be publically released in January. Our nation’s libraries play an important role in people’s lives now more than ever. As always, we are grateful for the commitment of state library staff and applaud the work they do to provide high quality library services across the nation.
