The Tucson Museum of Art and Historic Block will stabilize and conserve a seventeenth-century Spanish Colonial sculpture of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception. Made of wood embellished with many different colors of paint, silver, gilt, and glass, the sculpture exhibits the highly developed skills that exemplify masterpieces of Spanish Colonial art. This sculpture is featured in public gallery tours of the museum's Spanish colonial collection and is used as an educational tool for school children and teacher resource packets. Its restoration will provide a teaching opportunity about the importance and process of saving historic works of art and, when complete, will be featured in the reinstallation of the museum's Latin American collection.
