118 Museums Nationwide Receive Over $800,000 in Federal
Grants for Conservation of Resources
Washington, DC—The
Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and Heritage
Preservation announced 118 grants today totaling $806,820
to museums across the country. Conservation Assessment
Program (CAP) grants enable museums to conduct essential
conservation assessments of their sites and collections.
The assessment helps museums establish conservation goals
to ensure their holdings remain viable to the public for
years to come.
“I congratulate the museums receiving
Conservation Assessment Program grants,” said Robert
Martin, Director of the Institute of Museum and Library
Services. “The collections in their care hold America’s
rich and diverse cultural heritage. The grants IMLS makes
today will help museums ensure that our country’s
cultural, scientific, historic, and artistic heritage
remain viable to sustain a lifetime of learning for today’s
generation and generations to follow.”
IMLS funds the CAP grant program and Heritage
Preservation administers it. Grants support a two-day
visit by conservation professionals who review the museum’s
collections and environment and recommend priorities for
short and long-term conservation planning. This year,
conservation assessors will provide professional advice
on collections ranging from botanical gardens and zoos,
to historic structures and fragile collections.
"Heritage Preservation is pleased to
administer the Conservation Assessment Program, which
in its 15 year history has helped almost 2,500 museums
provide better care for their collections,” said
Heritage Preservation’s President Lawrence L. Reger.
Among the varied museums funded this year
are the Navy SEAL Museum in Fort Pierce, Florida, the
Mammoth Site of Hot Springs, South Dakota, and the Newsome
House Museum & Cultural Center in Newport News, Virginia.
Other grants announced today include Museum
Assessment Program grants and
Conservation Project Support grants. This is the first
of four grants rounds IMLS will announce for FY2005. The
second round will be announced in mid-June.
