Mary L. Chute Reappointed IMLS Deputy Director for Libraries

Washington, DC--Dr. Anne-Imelda M. Radice announced today that she is appointing Mary L. Chute to a second term as the agency’s Deputy Director for Library Services. Ms. Chute was first appointed by Dr. Robert S. Martin in 2002. Ms. Chute served as Acting Director of the Institute following the completion of Dr. Martin’s term in July 2005 until Dr. Radice’s confirmation in March 2006.

The agency’s statute provides that “the Office of Library Services shall be headed by a Deputy Director, who shall be appointed by the Director from among individuals who have a graduate degree in library science and expertise in library and information services.” As Deputy Director, Ms. Chute is the senior library and information policy official at the Institute. She is responsible for advising the Director, leading the Office of Library Services, acting as liaison with the library community, and providing input on the agency’s strategic plan. By statute the Deputy also serves as an ex-officio member of the National Museum and Library Services Board.

“Ms. Chute has made a significant contribution to the Institute. The success of the agency in promoting library and information policy is due to her fine leadership and networking ability,” said Dr. Radice. “I am pleased to have her as part of our leadership team and I look forward to building on the momentum that she has put into place.”

“I am fortunate to continue my relationship with the Institute of Museum and Library Services under Anne’s leadership, noted Ms. Chute. “It is a great honor to be able work on behalf of the American people to provide high quality library and information services. The Institute has a special role in fostering stronger relationships among all of our cultural heritage institutions.” Click here to view Ms. Chute's photograph and biography.
