John G. Shedd Aquarium, Chicago,
IL
Spreading
conservation awareness messages is one way the 75-year-old
John G. Shedd Aquarium is fulfilling its mission to show
that marine life connects people to the living world and
inspires people to make a difference. The Shedd Aquarium’s
conservation awareness campaigns and its multi-faceted
educational programs reflect its strong leadership in
the field and ensure its place as one of the most popular
destinations in Chicago.
Yasmeen Nanlawala (Yaz-meen
Nan-la-WAH-la) was a frequent visitor to the John G. Shedd
Aquarium growing up. Then in 2005 she became a Young Naturalist
Intern at Shedd, conducting and directing interpretations
of exhibits to guests, among other duties. The next year
she worked in Shedd’s education department as a
Senior Naturalist, mentoring and supervising younger students.
Among the many powerful memories Yasmeen carries with
her are the birth of a beluga whale and learning about
the rescue of a sea turtle now named “Nickel,”
who had a coin lodged in her throat. Now a student at
Denison University in Granville, Ohio, Yasmeen credits
her experience at Shedd with giving her more confidence
and opening her mind to a variety of career opportunities.
She thinks she might like to work with young people in
an out-of-classroom setting.
Philip D. “P.D.” Block
III is Chairman of the Board at Shedd Aquarium.
Mr. Block has served as a Trustee at Shedd for nearly
fifteen years. With his extensive experience in investment
management, he has overseen several committees, including
the Development Committee for which he was chair. Mr.
Block worked for Inland Steel Co. from 1958-1985 and then
became Vice President of Capital Guardian Trust from 1986-2004.
