WASHINGTON (March 19, 2007)--It is with
much sadness that my colleagues and I at the Institute
of Museum and Library Services mourn the loss of Raymond
D. Nasher. Mr. Nasher was a model citizen who loved his
community and shared his great passion for art with the
city of Dallas and the world. Mr. Nasher and his late
wife, Patsy, began collecting art nearly fifty years ago.
In October 2003 Mr. Nasher opened the Nasher Sculpture
Center, which features rotating exhibitions from the Nashers’
tremendous private collection of modern sculpture.
Mr. Nasher was a developer, collector, philanthropist,
and leader. On a national level, he was appointed to serve
on the President’s Committee on the Arts and the
Humanities by President George H.W. Bush in 1990, by President
William Jefferson Clinton in 1999, and by President George
W. Bush in 2002. At the time of his passing he was Vice
Chairman of the Committee. Mr. Nasher generously gave
of his time and expertise to serve the President and the
American people. We join our sister agency in grieving
the loss of this great man.
