Institute of Museum and Library Services Director and Staff Take Part in American Library Association Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C.,
June 21 – 27, 2007

Visit the IMLS Booth at the ALA Exhibition Hall Booth # 1746.

Washington, DC--Anne-Imelda Radice, Director of the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), and other agency representatives, will participate in various events during the American Library Association annual meeting in Washington, D.C., June 21-27. IMLS staff will be available for questions June 23-26, at the booth #1746. The exhibits will be located in the Washington Convention Center, located at 801 Mount Vernon Place, NW, Washington, D.C. Below is a list of IMLS-related sessions:

Event title: All History is Local in a Digital World
Moderator: Susan Malbin, Senior Program Officer, IMLS
Panelists: Nancy Allen, Dean and Director of the Penrose Library at the University of Denver
Erich Kesse, Director of the Digital Library Center, University of Florida
Judy Graves, Digital Projects Coordinator, Library of Congress
Description: The program will focus on local digital projects in which academic libraries, public libraries, museums, and archives collaborate to do what they cannot alone. Panelists will note successes and failures in digital space and allow time for questions. This program is sponsored by the RUSA, History Section, Local History Committee.

Event Title: 3M Reception Honoring the Recipients of the 3M/NMRT Professional Development Grant and the 2006 IMLS National Award for Library Service.

Event Title: Informing the Future of MARC: An Empirical Approach
Participants: Speakers: William E. Moen, Associate Professor, School of Library and Information Sciences, University of North Texas; Shawne Miksa, Assistant Professor, School of Library and Information Sciences, University of North Texas; Sally H. McCallum, Chief, Network Development and MARC Standards Office, Library of Congress
Description: This program presents findings from a major IMLS-funded research study on catalogers’ use of MARC (www.mcdu.unt.edu) and an opportunity to discuss future directions for MARC and cataloging practices in the context of FRBR, RDA, and XML. The study’s results provide a needed empirical basis to inform MARC’s future.

Event Title: Saving Sound 3: Audio and Audiovisual Digitization and Preservation

Description: The program will focus on the use of new technology for audio and audiovisual preservation. Speakers will cover digitization and preservation of audio materials, funding opportunities for audio and audiovisual digitization and preservation, and client/vendor relationships. The program is sponsored by the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services division, Preservation and Reformatting Section.

Event Title: Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) Coordinators Meeting

Description: The Balanced Scorecard (BSC) is an organizational tool enabling library management to develop a methodology focusing on customers, understanding their needs and demands for library services, and demonstrating accountability for using public funds. The BSC provides library management with supporting data needed to implement decisions. Presenters will provide an overview of the BSC, illustrate how libraries can implement BSC, and provide concrete examples on how BSC data impacted their decision-making process.
