Washington, DC—Librarians
from every state, the District of Columbia, and the U.S.
territories participated in the Pavilion of the States
at the National Book Festival on Saturday, September 29.
This is the Institute of Museum and Library Services’
sixth year of supporting the Pavilion at the festival.
The free festival is sponsored by the Library of Congress
and hosted by First Lady Laura Bush.
The Pavilion of the States promotes reading
and literacy projects as well as the literary traditions
of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S.
territories. Representatives from state libraries throughout
the nation provided information and answered questions
about their state’s writers, libraries, book festivals,
book awards and reading-promotion activities. Click
here to see photos taken at every state library table.
“The Pavilion of the States is a
wonderfully interactive place. Children and adults, alike,
visit representatives from each state to have their maps
stamped and learn about their reading and literacy programs,”
said Anne-Imelda M. Radice, PhD, Director of IMLS. “Our
nation's libraries do so much more than check out books.
Exciting programming, access to computers, and boundless
resources are to be discovered at our libraries. This
is all part of the reason that librarianship is being
seen as a career for the future.”
The authors who visited the Pavilion of
the States included:
Georgia: Shelia Moses, The Return
of Buddy Bush
Illinois: Richard Peck, Here Lies
the Librarian
Texas: Elmer Kelton, Six Bits a Day
North Carolina: Kathy Reichs, Break
