Washington, DC—President
George W. Bush awarded Dr. Anne-Imelda M. Radice, Director
of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS),
the 2008 Presidential Citizens Medal Wednesday on Dec.
10, 2008, in the Oval Office of the White House.
“Receiving the Presidential
Citizens Medal was a humbling experience,” Radice
said. “It made me reflect on all the people who
have helped me, specifically my parents who made sacrifices
so I could succeed. How wonderful for the President to
recognize the importance of culture to our nation. Being
recognized for service to the country inspires you to
do more and to work every day to help all of the people
that you can.”
The official citation noted
that Radice is a skilled administrator, art historian,
and museum professional. Through her career in public
service, she has worked to enhance the intellectual and
cultural development of all Americans. The United States
honors Dr. Anne-Imelda Radice for her commitment to excellence
and her dedication to providing people of all ages the
resources to explore new ideas and better understand the
world around them.
The Presidential Citizens
Medal was established in November 13, 1969, to recognize
U.S. citizens who have performed exemplary deeds of service
for the nation. It is one of the highest honors the President
can confer upon a civilian, second only to the Presidential
Medal of Freedom. Since it was established by Executive
Order in 1969, approximately 100 people have been awarded
the Presidential Citizens Medal.
The President presented 23 individuals
with the Presidential Citizens Medal and one award posthumously.
