Shaler North Hills Library in Glenshaw, Pennsylvania, boasts a bustling environment where families battle over book trivia, teens enjoy all-day reading marathons, and adults explore their creativity through art and music. Inspired by their logo "Books and So Much More," this Family Place Library seeks out the "more" through extensive literacy outreach to schools and community sites, champions reading and engages their community in a holistic, all-encompassing approach to library service.
"Libraries play a crucial role in our communities. The Shaler North Hills Library is a true asset to Northern Allegheny County, and I’m grateful for their commitment to our region," said Congressman Jason Altmire (PA-04).
"I am pleased that the Institute of Museum and Library Services has chosen the Shaler North Hills Library (SNHL) as a 2012 National Medal recipient. SNHL is an integral part of the Shaler community, and it continues to enrich the lives of area residents through numerous programs for teens and adults as well as innovative approach to promoting childhood literacy. I congratulate SNHL and its devoted staff for their well-deserved recognition as one of the nation’s top libraries," said U.S. Senator Bob Casey (PA).
Community Member: Janet Miller
Janet Miller grew up, got married, and raised a family less than three miles from the Shaler North Hills Library. An avid reader as a child, Janet instilled the love of reading in her daughters. Widowed in 2007, Janet retired from her job two years later. Shortly after retirement, Janet began volunteering at the place she deeply loved – the library. "The voids in my life are lifted by the library," Janet said. Whether overseeing the teen room, participating in book club, or coordinating the book sale, "the library sustains me in motivating my mind, my body and my soul."
