Message |
| Dear Museum and Library Professionals,
On the eve of President-elect Obama’s historic inauguration, many Americans are saving newspapers, buttons, posters, and bumper stickers for posterity. Museums and libraries have a special role to play in teaching communities how to properly preserve the material symbols of this historic occasion. Today’s memorabilia will join the collections already held in trust by museums and libraries to commemorate important moments in history.
As you reach out to your constituents, I encourage you to make use of the Guide to Online Resources, especially the section called Care For Collections at http://www.imls.gov/collections/resources/care.htm.These resources are part of the Institute’s Connecting to Collections initiative, a multiyear, multifaceted national initiative to help preserve our nation’s collections. For those of you who haven’t yet applied for the IMLS Connecting to Collections Bookshelf, a set of practical resources to help museums and libraries sustain our heritage, there’s still time! Based on the enthusiastic response to the Bookshelf, IMLS is offering a third round of competition to distribute an additional 1,000 Bookshelves. Applications can be submitted to AASLH between January 5, 2009, and March 9, 2009, at www.aaslh.org/Bookshelf.
I commend you on the important work you do to unite and advance your communities.
Sincerely,
Anne-Imelda M. Radice
IMLS Director |
