| Stuart-Hobson Middle School Discovers
and Saves Archival Treasures |
For decades, irreplaceable PTA
scrapbooks, historical school photos, and roll books dating from 1926 to 1967 languished in a
little-used room of Capitol Hill’s Stuart-Hobson Middle School. Rediscovered during the 2006
renovation of the school library, the archival treasures shed light on the ethnic and national
origins of the families, parents’ occupations, and outbreaks of serious diseases such as scarlet
fever. In 2007, school librarian Janice McKinnon applied for and received a grant from the District
of Columbia Public Library (DCPL) to rescue the documents and develop a school archives.

Message |

Around the country, public libraries are responding to the consequences of the economic downturn.
Librarians guide patrons to online resources to help them build effective resumes, submit applications,
access training and testing opportunities, and get advice on developing small businesses. Some
entrepreneurs use the library to run their small businesses using valuable WiFi connections. Helping job
seekers is an increasingly critical role for libraries, with 62.2 percent of libraries reporting it as
mission critical up from 44 percent a year earlier, according to a 2009 American Library Association
(ALA) study.
We are hearing more and more about state agencies that are working in partnership with state library
agencies to disseminate information about unemployment, health care, and mortgage relief programs. So my
message today is one of appreciation for our state library agencies and public libraries for stepping up
to the plate and responding in such a meaningful way to the needs of their communities.
