IMLS Honors 10 Museums and Libraries for Outstanding Community Service
National MedalFive museums and five libraries have won the 2008 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the nation’s highest honor for institutions that make significant and exceptional contributions to their communities. The National Medals are presented to 10 institutions every year by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), in coordination with the White House. Read more.

Image of Dr. Anne-Imelda RadiceLast month, I participated in a week-long celebration of American culture and history held in Paris by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). The highlight of the event was the international launch of Picturing America, the National Endowment for the Humanities’ initiative that enhances the teaching, study, and understanding of U.S. history and culture by bringing some of the America’s greatest works of art into its classrooms and libraries. The Institute is proud to sponsor this initiative. At the symposium, I offered the following remarks on the importance of cultural diplomacy and what makes it work. Read more

Nominate your favorite museum or library for the National Medal for Museum and Library Service (formerly the National Award) for their significant and exceptional contributions to their communities. The medal includes a $10,000 award to each recipient and an awards ceremony in Washington, DC. Deadline for 2009: February 15, 2009. Read more

Institute of Museum and Library Services Sponsors the Pavilion of the States at the 8th Annual National Book Festival
Despite rainy forecasts, more than 120,000 book lovers flocked to the eighth annual National Book Festival held September 27 on the National Mall. Many families visited the Pavilion of the States supported for the seventh year by IMLS. Read more
