The initiative will also involve 12 second-year Scholars for the Knowledge River program students and 24 Native American and Hispanic high school students in a Teen Community Health Information Institute to explore health sciences librarianship and provide community health services. The Knowledge River program will help students develop valuable skills such as leadership, professional contribution, and community service as well as improve their job preparation and job-seeking skills by providing workshops, community learning experiences, and opportunities to interact with library leaders. The University of California, Los Angeles, Graduate School of Education and Information Studies will build the infrastructure to develop the California Rare Book School to meet the needs of the western U.S. special library community. A feasibility study conducted in 2002 identified a need for such an educational program. Two groups of students will benefit—those already working in special collections libraries who need the knowledge and skills to describe the materials in these libraries and to preserve and provide access to them, and those in accredited programs of library and information science who seek careers in special collections librarianship. The project will mount the first group of courses in August 2006, and the school's program will be established in 2007. The long-term goal is to have a permanent program in special collections and to expand the number of educated and trained special collections librarians. Match $99,141

Pacific Resources for Education and Learning will address the continuing education needs of library staff in the U.S.-affiliated Pacific—American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, Guam, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Republic of Palau—by providing summer institutes for selected segments of the region's preprofessional staff. Each institute will include both traditional classroom instruction and a practicum for the participants. These activities will be supplemented by distance learning support for participants after they have completed the session and a follow-up workshop held as part of the annual Pacific Islands Association of Libraries and Archives conference. The funds will provide 30 attendance scholarships for new and aspiring professionals from both fields, including 10 from professionally underrepresented minorities, and costs of speakers from the museum community. The conference is expected to attract 250 to 275 attendees. Titled Intersecting Missions, Converging Futures: Libraries and Museums in the Twenty-First Century, the conference will bring together practicing and aspiring professionals from both fields to investigate common concerns and to explore ways in which they can work together more closely in the future to fulfill their respective roles in society. Indiana University (IU), in a Cooperative Agreement with the Institute of Museums and Library Services, will develop an online, instructor-mediated course in outcomes-based evaluation (OBE) for library and museum professionals and students in library and museum educational programs. Funding during the three-year project will support course development, testing, and a two-year initial deployment at no cost to course participants. The course will prepare library and museum professionals to design and measure learner outcomes for projects and programs for which short- or medium-term learning is a key goal. The course will utilize case studies based on outstanding library and museum projects and will employ authentic multimedia examples and engaging, reality-based simulations that call for role-playing and response to emerging problems.

Northeast Document Conservation Center – Andover, MA

The Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC) will work in partnership with the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) to develop, test, and disseminate a training program on digital preservation for staff in libraries, archives, museums, and other cultural heritage organizations. A project advisory committee of digital experts, library school educators, and representatives of state libraries will develop the content for a pilot conference, entitled Persistence of Memory, to be offered in NEDCC's region. After the event, the content will be evaluated and reshaped, the curriculum materials will be packaged, and the conference will be taken on the road to two locations outside NEDCC’s region. Seventy-five scholarships will be awarded to ensure participation by diverse constituents, and approximately 500 professionals are expected to attend the conferences.

The University of Maryland at College Park College of Information Studies (CLIS), in collaboration with the university's Human Computer Interaction Lab, will recruit and educate four doctoral students to teach and conduct research in the area of children's information resources and services and digital libraries. Emphasis will be on recruiting from underrepresented groups or individuals who have an interest in meeting the needs of diverse communities. Students will assist in the design, approval process, delivery, and evaluation of at least one course in CLIS, and write at least one co-authored or single-authored paper in the area of children's information needs and digital technology. Upon completion of the doctoral program, students will be prepared to accept positions as faculty members in programs of information studies and contribute to the education of the next generation of professionals working with young people. Therefore, four physicians will be educated in information and library science to develop as medical informationists. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Library and Information Science will partner with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Institute on Aging to conduct a research project designed to study the career patterns of graduates of library and information science (LIS) programs by building an in-depth understanding of educational, workplace, career, and retention issues faced by LIS graduates. This part of the research will be sited in North Carolina, where a full range of LIS program types exist, including one that is in a historically black institution to allow for a focus on minority career and retention issues. The methods developed through this research will be used to generate a transferable model for career tracking of LIS graduates nationally. Match: $250,650

The New York Public Library (NYPL) will develop a Leadership Academy to (1) educate 60 staff members on core concepts of leadership and management over two years, (2) provide staff the opportunity and knowledge to develop a solution to a leadership or management problem at NYPL, and (3) begin to prepare staff to become the future leaders of NYPL and the greater library community. The project will also train 15 senior managers to prepare them to support the staff who participate. Training will focus on leadership, communication, and management and supervision. The academy will consist of programs on executive management theories, on the practical application of theories covered in the programs, an assignment for staff to apply their new knowledge to existing management or leadership problems at NYPL, and the creation of plans of action.

The State University of New York at Albany School of Information Science and Policy will improve education and training of visual resources (VR) professionals by providing the library community with the information necessary to support the development of successful training and education programs for the next generation of VR professionals. This research will identify current and future competencies required for the profession and evaluate American Library Association-accredited library and information science (LIS) schools for their capacity to meet these competencies. Guidelines and a statement of core competencies will be established to serve as potential standards for the training and education of VR professionals. In addition, a strategic document consisting of recommendations and strategies as well as instructional modules will be created to facilitate the integration of core competencies into existing LIS programs.

The School of Information Studies at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, in collaboration with the Marquette University Libraries, the Milwaukee Public Library, and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Libraries, will produce highly skilled organization of information professionals from diverse backgrounds. Twenty students will be admitted to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Information Studies’ American Library Association-accredited master in library and information science program. Students will be matched with a faculty mentor, provided with a funded internship, and receive tuition and support for a range of activities. Match: $232,515
