The Peoria PlayHouse Children’s Museum , which opened in June 2015, features “Real Tools,” a makerspace area stocked with wood and carpentry tools, as well as recyclables, tape, fabric, and other non-carpentry materials. Over the past year, the museum has watched how visitors use the space, and wondered – how can a space like this best achieve our goal of helping visitors become explorers and creators of the world?Read more

Maker Jawn Initiative at the Free Library of Philadelphia, has its roots in youth empowerment and engagement and has evolved organically since 2011 through various grants and programs offered by the Free Library. Maker programming offers a safe space for students to come after school to explore, tinker, and learn. What began in one library has grown to six library locations in North Philadelphia.Read more

In early May 2016, the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum reached the milestone of 100,000 catalogued lots in its mollusk (mostly “dry shells”) collection. This high-priority, IMLS-funded cataloguing project, which includes web dissemination of a searchable version of the catalogue, has been funded by two “Museums for America” grants, both in the Collections Stewardship category.Read more

IMLS recently announced the recipients of National Leadership Grants for Libraries (NLG-L) from our fall 2015 application deadline, and over the past few weeks, our colleagues Trevor Owens and Emily Reynolds have highlighted projects aligned with the agency’s National Digital Platform funding priority in a four-part blog series.
