On December 22, 2010 Susan Hildreth's nomination to be director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) was confirmed by unanimous consent by the United States Senate.

The President signed into law the Museum and Library Services Act of 2010 (S. 3984) on December 22, 2010. The new law reauthorizes the existing programs of the Institute of Museum and Library Services with some important changes.

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is accepting applications for the 2011 Native American Library Services Basic Grant program. Federally recognized Indian tribes and Alaska Native villages and corporations may apply for these grants in either the Basic or the Basic with Education/Assessment Option categories.

First Lady Michelle Obama presented the 2010 National Medal for Museum and Library Service to five museums and five libraries at a White House ceremony today. The National Medal is the highest honor the nation confers on these institutions for their outstanding contribution to America’s communities.

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) has announced that it will hold a workshop on December 8, 2010, at the Miami-Dade Public Library as part of a national campaign aimed at engaging museums, libraries, and civic leaders in meeting the 21st century learning needs of their communities. IMLS is co-hosting the event with the Miami-Dade Public Library System and the Wolfsonian-Florida International University.

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is accepting grant applications for the agency’s 2011 National Leadership Grant (NLG) program. Applications, guidelines, and examples of successful proposals can be found on the agency’s Web site. The deadline for submitting applications is February 1, 2011.

On October 18, Archivist of the United States David S. Ferreiro administered the oath of office to six new members of the National Museum and Library Services Board (NMLSB), the advisory board of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). All six new members were appointed by President Obama and confirmed by the U.S. Senate earlier this year.
