The Detroit Historical Society (DHS) has a 100-year legacy of telling the city's stories and why they matter. With the 50-year anniversary of the tumultuous Detroit Riots looming, DHS sought the best way to tell the traumatic and sensitive story that still resonated with communities across the country, while also incorporating all Detroiters in the narrative. Rather than avoiding the subject or addressing it through a traditional exhibition. the 50-year anniversary became the catalyst for Detroit 67: Looking Back to Move Forward, a community engagement project that changed the way DHS defined its role in civic dialogue and historic commemoration.
