The Mariners' Museum and Park

Log Number: ARPML-251038-OMLS-22

The Mariners’ Museum and Park in Virginia will photograph all of its objects, beginning with its Peter Ifland Research Collection on Navigational Instruments, and make them accessible to global audiences. Digitizing this collection will highlight scientific changes over time, as well as document the artistic components of each object. This project will serve as a road map for future object digitization efforts. Currently, only 3,000 of the 32,000 objects in the museum’s collection are photographed, digitized, and available online. Improved online access to the museum’s collections will help the museum fulfill its mission and sustain a strong virtual presence during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. As the museum disseminates its collections more widely in the long term, it expects to reach new audiences including researchers, authors, publishers, students, and teachers.
