Winterthur Museum will clean, polish, and coat or recoat 750 of its early American silver pieces. The collection includes some of the first coins minted in Boston, tankards made by Paul Revere, Jr., flatware, jewelry, and spectacles of sterling and silver plate. Designed to occur over two years, this project will preserve the silver collection while allowing it to remain on display for the visiting public, researchers, and students. In addition to the conservation treatment, the museum will publish accounts of their work, offering recommendations and cautions to other museums for lacquering silver in their collections.
