The Atlanta History Center of the Atlanta Historical Society will digitize 7,500 photographs selected from the collections of three historically important Atlanta photojournalists of the Atlanta Journal and the Atlanta Constitution: Kenneth G. Rogers, Bill Wilson, and Marion Johnson The work of these photographers provides a visual documentation of Georgia politics, popular culture, and the developing urban landscape of Atlanta as it evolved from a small southern city into the capital of the New South. In addition, the project's technical approach provides an exemplary model for the preservation of and access to photographic media of historical value: original media (negatives and transparencies) will be stored off-site in cold storage for long-term preservation, while a robust digital archive with rich searching and browsing features will be developed that will greatly increase access to the digital images for both on-site and remote users.
