The Erie Art Museum will use its grant to continue its largest educational program, “Kids as Curators.” Every year, the museum works with teachers and students from three middle school populations—one rural, one suburban, and one inner-city—to create an exhibit that draws from the students’ collections. Teachers are trained in the curatorial process over the summer. In the fall, all participating students take an in-depth tour of the museum, paying special attention to how exhibits are constructed and lit, and how objects are sequenced and placed. From September to January, schools decide on an exhibit theme, form and curate their collections, and design and construct their exhibits. After being displayed at each school, all three exhibits will be professionally installed at the museum from February to March for the greater community to enjoy.
