The Winterthur Museum is embarking on an inventory project of its museum collections. The museum’s collection of 90,000 objects serves as a core resource for museum visitors, researchers, students, and staff for a variety of programs. As designed, this project will entail a room-by-room review of the more than 320 physical locations of Winterthur’s 90,000 museum objects within a two-year period. The inventory will confirm current locations for the objects, reconcile and update collection database records, and support the standardization of 72,300 database location descriptors. The project will create the basis for effecting new and more efficient methods for tracking collections and will establish a solid foundation from which to relaunch an ongoing, rotating inventory program.
