Museum Village in Orange County

Log Number: MA-05-10-0497-10

The Museum Village of Old Smith’s Cove will begin to conduct an eleven-month inventory of its collection, estimated at 25,000 objects. The last complete inventory was conducted in 1973. With the help of a consultant, staff and volunteers will go in teams, building by building, over the thirty-acre campus to capture basic vital information about the artifacts in the collection. Artifacts are found in a dozen exhibit buildings as well as in additional storage areas. Part of the inventory process will require moving artifacts in order to gain access to them as well as to move them to more sound and secure locations. Finally, the consultant will work with the board of trustees to create disposition plans for the collections, whether for conservation, de-accession into an education collection, further research, or donation and relocation to another museum.
