The Peabody Museum of Natural History will add a video production initiative to its free afterschool program that promotes STEM literacy, provides college preparation, promotes career awareness, and increases transferable skills development. The program serves 120 high school students each year in low performing, high-needs districts. The additional programming will allow students to create a series of short films that interpret the work of curators and researchers at the museum, showcasing both the research and collections. Each class will plan, film, and edit the videos, to debut in May of each academic year. Students will become part of a motivated, goal-driven peer community, while developing the knowledge and skills to make informed academic and career choices. The initiative will benefit the museum by creating a venue for curators and other researchers to share their work with the public.
