Log Number: MA-249287-OMS-21

The Cameron Art Museum (CAM) will design and implement the United States Colored Troops (USCT) Sculpture Interpretation Project to enhance CAM’s standing as a trusted cultural gathering place for community learning, debate, and dialogue. The museum will tell the story of 1,600 local soldiers who fought for the Union at the Battle of Forks Road. The interpretation of the site and the new sculpture of the USCT soldiers on CAM’s grounds by North Carolina artist Stephen Hayes will spark dialogue and create community conversations creating a fuller understanding of our common history and our shared humanity. The museum will hire a Cultural Curator to develop programs designed to increase community engagement . Project outcomes include a series of art and social justice programs to build community connecting the stories of the USCT with modern day social justice concerns.
