Memphis Brooks Museum of Art

Log Number: MA-249803-OMS-21

Memphis Brooks Museum of Art will open a new state-of-the-art facility on the downtown Memphis riverfront in 2025. To prepare for this historic relocation, the Brooks has begun assessing each area of its 10,000-object permanent collection of visual art objects dating from antiquity to the present including paintings, sculpture, prints, drawings, photographs, artist books, decorative arts, textile arts, African art, ancient art, Pre-Columbian art, and more. Focusing now on decorative arts made from ceramics, metals, and glass, the museum will hire curatorial and conservation expertise in these fields to assess its holdings in these areas. Assessors will provide written reports compiling information on objects’ date of creation, condition, construction, quality, and provenance. Assessors also will make general observations about the collection area, identifying strengths and opportunities for growth, making recommendations for storage, possible deaccessioning, and potential conservation needs.
