Memphis Brooks Museum of Art

Log Number: MA-253295-OMS-23

The Memphis Brooks Museum of Art will reimagine its interactive family gallery through a design and fabrication process that supports efforts to provide enriching, interactive, and accessible arts-based educational experiences to visitors. The new exhibition design will be dedicated to visual literacy, and will offset declining public access to arts education, which disproportionately impacts communities with higher-than-average poverty rates, like Memphis. Museum staff will begin with research into best practices for developing interactive family spaces, then work with arts and education professionals to guide the design process, and lead focus groups to better understand the needs and expectations of local families. An evaluation partner will support each step of the process, including a second round of focus group surveys during a soft opening to best understand the effectiveness of the new space. The project will result in an updated exhibition for multigenerational engagement where families will be inspired, discuss art, experiment with various processes, exercise their creativity, and share meaningful time together.
