Oneida Indian Nation

Log Number: MN-00-18-0020-18

The Oneida Indian Nation will preserve, restore, and digitize its collection of at-risk audio cassette tapes containing oral histories of members of the Nation. The project team will visually assess and photograph the physical appearance of the tapes, count them, and log them. Then they will digitize the tapes and create backups on four hard drives. Tribal leaders or their designees will review and vet all audio materials to identify sensitive content and determine which materials may be made available to Nation members or to a broader audience. Those approved for release will be shared with tribal members in the Oneida Indian Nation Children and Elders Center and the Oneida Indian Nation Cultural Center. By transferring these one-of-a-kind recordings of a bygone era to a safer, more secure media through digitization, the project will assist in sustaining the Oneida Indian Nation's history, heritage, culture, and knowledge for future generations.
