The Hawaiʻi State Archives will digitize over 100,000 negatives from two of the premier architectural photographers of the latter 20th century, David Franzen and Nancy Bannick, and make them freely accessible in a bilingual (Hawaiian language and English) online database. Three paid graduate student interns will be hired and trained to create high resolution digital files for over 40 boxes of photographs, slides, and prints as well as clean, transcribe, and translate descriptive metadata. This newly digitized bilingual archive will serve as a visual record of the "Hawaiʻi that was," providing worldwide access to Hawaiian architectural history and heritage, as well as protecting these irreplaceable materials from continued deterioration and eventual loss.
