Hula Preservation Society (HPS) will provide access to educational resources that document native perspectives through song from the early 20th century, a period of great upheaval for Hawaiians and Hawaii, and a time when Hawaiian music was growing and taking precedence over ancient chant practices. Specific steps include digitization of a unique 500-piece audio collection from a community elder, digital documentation of the elder’s insights, background, and personal knowledge of the individual items in the audio collection, including why they were chosen and about the artists and composers for each, and finally development of an online resource for this set of materials through a partnership with Ulukau: The Hawaiian Electronic Library (of the University of Hawaii-Hilo), a well-established online resource for Hawaiian culture, history, and linguistic-related materials.
