The University of Pittsburgh will plan to develop the Civic Algorithmic Sandbox, a library-based artificial intelligence literacy initiative that helps the public understand how government agencies use data-driven decision tools in services that shape their economic lives. The project is comprised of AlgoHub, an interactive simulation platform; a librarian facilitation training curriculum; and a community knowledge documentation practice focused on public services. The primary target group for planning activities is public library staff at the Western Allegheny Community Library in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. The second target group is library patrons who will participate in AlgoHub testing and community listening sessions. This project examines the knowledge, skills, and support that public librarians need to facilitate community engagement with government decision systems. This project is focused on how community members currently understand how government agencies use data and algorithmic systems in public services.
