Purpose: Supporting Lifelong Learning The Leila Arboretum Society (LAS) is a nonprofit organization that operates a public garden in Battle Creek, Michigan. The newly built children's Garden is a dynamic, unique, interactive garden where visitors of all ages can discover firsthand the many interrelationships of the natural world. In this project, LAS will expand the number and diversity of visitors and stakeholders by using the children's Garden as a launch point for programming and outreach efforts that will attract visitors. The grant will enable LAS to implement innovative programming for children and families. The project activities will result in an increased and diversified audience, stronger programs, and more visitors. Among its activities under the grant, LAS will print an informational and educational brochure and a map of the children's Garden; install audio/interpretive signage in the mini-gardens to augment the Visitor's learning experience; develop and implement family events and workshops as well as self-discovery backpacks; enhance the museum's Web site to increase accessibility and add links to children's Garden activities and opportunities; and develop science-based school programming options that reinforce state educational standards.
