The Detroit Science Center (DSC) will offer an interactive approach to informal education, providing hands-on learning and volunteer opportunities for middle school students, through its “Junior Docent Leadership Development” program. The audience for the program will be students in grades 7 and 8 attending Detroit’s University Prep Science & Math charter middle school. The program goals are 1) to help students achieve academically, especially in the areas of science and mathematics, by connecting informal learning experiences at the science center with formal classroom instruction, 2) to help students develop “real-world” experiences in the areas of public speaking, presentations, and audience management, 3) to provide adult science center Pi Society Science Docents with opportunities to mentor and equip students with the skills needed to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics careers, and 4) to offer museum visitors enhanced educational material related to exhibitions.
