Detroit Zoo

The Detroit Zoo will expand its Thriving Together program, which engages youth ages 13-19 and the broader community in conversations around environmental issues. To develop and implement the project, the zoo will deepen its collaboration with InsideOut Literary Arts to provide inquiry-based environmental education for high school poets from its afterschool program and to create opportunities for those students to strengthen their capacity to create and perform spoken-word poetry as a means of expression and as a tool for self-development and civic engagement. Thriving Together students will participate in two learning experiences consisting of eight workshops each. Toward the end of the project year, students will create and perform spoken-word poetry for their communities through eight performance events hosted by local organizations.
