The George Eastman Museum will fully catalog, digitize and provide free online access to their entire cinematographic equipment collection. Consisting of 1,450 objects, the collection traces the invention, development, and advancement of motion picture technology, and includes the 1895 Lumière Cinématographe, the 1897 Edison Kinetoscope, the 1906 Elgéphone, two-color 1922 Technicolor cameras, and the 1923 Ciné-Kodak and Kodascope projector. Along with comprehensive and accurate catalog records, the plan will create approximately 12,100 digital object files, consisting of a set of eight high-resolution digital images to facilitate access for scholarly research. A variety of public programs, including simulcast and recorded webinars, will inform and raise awareness of the museum staff, members, and onsite and virtual audiences about the project’s progress.
