Portland Art Museum

Log Number: MA-249741-OMS-21

The Portland Art Museum will mount a major retrospective exhibition of the works of the groundbreaking mid-century modernist Oscar Howe (Yanktonai/Dakota; 1915–1983). Co-organized with the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, the exhibition will be complemented by a concurrent site-specific installation, “They Came from Fire,” by artist Jeffrey Gibson (Mississippi Band Choctaw, b. 1972). The museum will collaborate with Many Nations Academy teachers and students to develop a program for student-led tours of the exhibition. The museum also will partner with the Native American Youth and Family Center to engage the community in workshops and after-school programs.
