The University of Alabama will parter with the Alabama Veterans Museum and Archives to produce an artificial intelligence (AI)–driven retrieval system for virtual reality (VR) learning content that will engage visitors using the lived experiences of veterans across multiple conflicts. The project team will use AI to translate archival holdings into immersive virtual reality experiences through 3D asset rendering, spatial audio integration, and user interaction systems designed for wireless VR headsets. The virtual reality experience will be tested at the Alabama Veterans Museum and Archives, where visitors will interact with 3D artifacts and authenticated veteran oral histories. To measure efficacy, the project team will assess the impact of the experiences on visitors’ retention of historical facts and connections to the material. By creating an open-source framework with open dissemination, the system will provide access to immersive technology for museums nationwide.
