National Jazz Museum in Harlem

The National Jazz Museum in Harlem will strengthen the stewardship of its collections by rehousing and further organizing archival materials, artifacts, and musical ephemera in improved storage systems. Project activities include conducting a condition assessment of existing conditions, acquiring and installing new shelving and storage containers, processing and rehousing more than 300 boxes of recordings, books, and archival materials, updating collection records and inventories, and drafting an implementation strategy for a collections management system. The project will involve recruiting an archives intern from The City College of New York to gain hands-on archival experience within a Harlem cultural organization. The outcome of project activities will be improved preservation, organization, and accessibility of the museum’s collections by creating a safe and organized storage condition that will help prevent deterioration and make the collections easier to locate and manage, supporting future exhibitions, research, and educational programming.
