Washington, DC—The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) announced the recipients of six competitive library grants totaling $243,944 for the Pacific Territories and Freely Associated States.

IMLS provides support for these entities through a competitive process administered by Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL). This year’s grants were awarded to the following:

  • Feleti Barstow Public Library – Pago Pago, American Samoa
  • Joeten Kiyu Public Library – Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands
  • FSM National Government – Palikir, Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia
  • Guam Public Library System – Hagatna, Guam
  • Republic of Palau – Koror, Palau
  • Alele, Inc. – Majuro, Republic of Marshall Islands

“Pacific Island communities continue to apply IMLS grant funds in resourceful ways to meet their unique opportunities and challenges,” said IMLS Director Dr. Kathryn K. Matthew. “Local libraries have taken the lead on preserving native traditions and culture, maintaining technology infrastructure, and reaching young readers in remote locations. All of these initiatives point to positive, sustainable impact for Pacific Islanders."
