Katherine Maas Appointed Deputy Director for Museum Services

Washington, DC—Acting Director Keith Sonderling of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is pleased to announce the appointment of current Chief of Staff, Katherine Maas as Deputy Director of Museum Services effective August 11, 2025.

“The Deputy Director of Museum Services is a cornerstone position for IMLS, guiding museum programs, overseeing key grantmaking activities, and ensuring that IMS delivers on our mission to support and strengthen museums nationwide,” said Acting Director Sonderling. “Katherine Maas’s leadership, experience, and deep understanding of IMLS makes her the perfect choice to keep things moving forward seamlessly.”

In addition to her field museum experience, Katherine has worked for IMLS since 2010, starting as Staff Assistant in the Office of Museum Services, then from 2016, she worked in the Office of the Director, serving as Chief of Staff for the past 4 years. This experience demonstrates that she truly understands the operations and importance of the Agency’s role with America 250, Workforce Development, Information Literacy and AI Education, and local Economic Development.

Katherine graduated from Vassar College with an AB in Science and Technology Studies, holds two master’s degrees from Penn State University (History), George Washington University (Museum Studies) and was a National Science Foundation Fellow.
