The Library and Information Service Program of the Puerto Rico Department of Education will use funds to support the goals of their Five-Year Plan for FY 2013-2017, which reflect the purposes and priorities of the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA). In Puerto Rico, specific goals address 1) providing virtual library services to residents of Puerto Rico, regardless of age, location, social, economic or physical conditions; 2) improving the academic performance of Puerto Rico's public school students by encouraging the development of strong school libraries; 3) expanding library programs and services to the people of Puerto Rico that belong to diverse geographic and socioeconomic backgrounds, including senior citizens, persons with disabilities and those with limited literacy; and 4) supporting qualified library personnel with knowledge, skills, abilities and attitudes necessary to provide excellent library and information services.
